Dr. Maldonado is a board-certified rheumatologist and a board-certified internist who worked at the University of Miami School of Medicine as a professor of rheumatology from December 2002 until June 2009. During that time, he was able to treat and study patients with systemic lupus erythematosus and mixed connective tissue disease, which led to some seminal publications in the field. Some of this research has led to improved understanding of the immune pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus and other connective tissue diseases.
Dr. Maldonado has performed many lectures on the topic of systemic lupus erythematosus as well as mixed connective tissue disease and other rheumatologic diseases. Dr. Maldonado did his internal medicine training at the prestigious Walter Reed Army Medical Center during which time he was with the U.S. Army. Dr. Maldonado is a seasoned physician, and he worked with the U.S. Army from 1992 until 1999. He did his fellowship of rheumatology under the guidance of world renowned, Dr. Ralph Williams, at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine and the Albuquerque VA Hospital.
Dr. Maldonado is actively involved in clinical research within the group and plans to continue with lupus and rheumatic disease studies. Dr. Maldonado received his medical degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and is completely fluent in English and Spanish.
